The Wind energy does not contaminate, is inexhaustible and restrains the consumption of fossil fuel to avoid the climatic change. It’s a develop technology to its full implementation.

In fairly conditions to compete and yield with other traditional power sources, wind energy costs vs coal thermal power stations (considered traditionally as the cheapest fuel source), fuel power stations and even with nuclear energy, if we consider the cost to repair the environmental damages, Wind Power is one of the cheapest energy sources available.

Generating electric energy without combustion or thermal transformation, represents, from the environmental point of view, a very clean process, contamination free, etc… There is a big impact in the reduction of pollution because of the extraction, transformation, transport and combustion of fossil fuels, that helps the environment, air, earth and water and therefore the living creatures living within.

It avoids the contamination that comes from transporting fuels; gas, petroleum, gasoline, diesel, oil or coal. It reduces the high marine and terrestrial traffic in the surroundings of traditional power stations. It suppresses the risks of accidents during the supplying process: disasters with oil tankers (transportation of nuclear waste, etc). It avoids the installation of supply lines: piping to the refineries or the gas power stations.

Using wind energy to produce electricity helps to preserve the chemical characteristics of the soil, avoid earth erosion since there is neither polluting agent that affects it, nor dumpers or great earth removals.

Unlike to what can happen with the conventional energies, Wind Power produces no alteration to ground waters by consumption, or by toxic waste contamination. The electricity that comes from wind power, does not produce toxic gases, neither contributes to the greenhouse effect, nor destroys the ozone layer or creates acid rain. It does not create dangerous secondary side products or polluting remains.

Wind energy Vs fossil fuels

Each kWh. of electricity generated by Wind energy avoid:

- From 0.60 to 950 kg. of CO2

- 1.33 gr. of SO2

- 1.67 gr. of NO

(en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon_footprint)

That are the pollutants that these fuels emits when burned to generate the same amount of energy.

The electricity produced by a wind generators avoids that thousands of liters of petroleum and tons of black coal are burned daily in thermal power stations. Wind turbines produce identical amount of energy that the obtained by burning daily 1,000 kg of coal. Wile avoiding to burning those amount of coal, the emission of 4,109 kg of CO2 are reduced, this is equivalent to the emissions being produced by burning 200 trees. The emission of 66 kg of SO2 is prevented as well as 10 kg. NO being this the main reason for acid rain.

The Wind energy is obtained by mechanical process and independent of any policy or commercial relation, and therefore directly exploitable.

When completing its life cycle, after the disassemble it leave no tracks of ever being there.

A 10 MW wind field

• Avoids 28,480 Tons of CO2 to be expelled to the air

• replaces the equivalent to 2,447 Tons of oil.

• It provides work to 130 people for one year during the design and the construction.

• It provides an industry and the development of technology.

• It generates electric energy for 11,000 families.

Disadvantages of Wind energy

Because of the low density of air, it implies to manufacture great and consequently expensive machines. They may reach up to the height of a building of ten or more flours, and a total wing spread of twenty meters, which makes them quite expensive

From the aesthetic point of view, the Wind energy produces inevitable a visual impact, since there locations normally turn out to be those that evidence the presence of these big machines over hills, mountains and coast line. In this sense, the implantation of the Wind energy on great scale can produce a clear alteration on the landscape, that it will have to be evaluated based on the existing situation in each location.

A negative impact is also present by the noise produced by speed of the wings and the turn of the rotor, but it’s defiantly not worst then the acoustic pollution generated by an thermal power stations with similar capabilities, and only if we are very next to the mills.

Also, while selecting a field it is important to study the impact to the fauna in the area, speaking mainly about birds, there is always the risk they fly into the circling wings, although solutions like painting the wings can reduce or even resolve this matter, locating the mills suitably leaving “corridors” for the birds, and, in extreme cases, track the birds by radar and even stop the turbines to avoid massive collisions.
