Power Correction Device

Power Savers

A power correction device is an add-on electrical component that can provide energy savings by reducing the amount of power drawn from your power company by raising the power factor in your home and enhancing your electrical system’s capacity.

Low power factor is caused by inductive electrical loads such as electric motors, transformers and high-intensity discharge lighting. Inductive (motor) loads require electrical current to create a magnetic field to produce the desired work. A common example would be a clothes washer, which uses an electric motor to turn the agitator and run a pump to move the water. The electric motor in the washer requires more energy to start up than it does to run at a steady speed. This reactive power of a motor at start-up causes the power factor to decrease and to reduce the efficiency of the electricity that you purchase.

So, does your home qualify as a good candidate for a power correction device?

Let’s start with the kitchen: Your refrigerator has several motors. A dishwasher has a motor or maybe two. The range hood has a motor to power the ventilation fan. The microwave may have a motor. How about a blender? Maybe there’s a ceiling fan too.

Somewhere in the house there’s a furnace and/or air conditioner. Both have electric motors to move the air. Many homes nowadays use ceiling fans in nearly every room. Most bathrooms have exhaust fans and hair dryers. Do you have a pool or hot tub? How about a well? Garages have door openers, power tools and maybe even a freezer. Basements have sump pumps and dehumidifiers. Fluorescent lights anywhere in the house can lower the power factor also.

The good news is that if you acknowledged to having only two or three of the above motor-driven devices, you could be saving a significant amount of money on your electric bill by having a power correction device installed in your home. In addition, a power correction device will increase your electrical system’s branch capacity. Uncorrected power factor can cause power losses in your distribution system. This will cause lights to briefly go dim when a motor is turned on somewhere in the house and indicates that a drop in voltage is occurring, which can cause overheating and premature failure of motors and other inductive equipment.
